GTA VI (6) Predicted to Have Higher Revenue Than Any Other Single Piece of Media This Year
Few entertainment releases have generated anticipation like GTA VI (6). More than 13 years after GTA V’s launch, the next instalment has become much more than a video game. The road to release has been filled with viral speculation, record-breaking trailer launches, major leaks, endless fan theories and near-constant media coverage, all of which have only fuelled the hype surrounding Rockstar’s return.
That anticipation extends far beyond gaming communities. Reports of employees booking time off around launch – with a potential $1B loss to the US economy after the fact – social feeds flooded with reaction content, and mainstream news outlets covering every new development show the significance of the release. For some, GTA VI represents a long-awaited return to one of entertainment’s most iconic franchises. For others, it will be their first experience of a series that has shaped gaming, internet culture, and popular media for decades.
In this blog, we’ll explore:
- Why GTA VI has become one of the most anticipated entertainment releases of all time

Rockstar Games’ GTA
What is GTA?
Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is one of the biggest entertainment franchises in history. As an open-world action video game franchise developed by Rockstar Games, the game is set in fictional cities inspired by real US locations; users can complete story-driven missions, drive vehicles, explore environments, and… commit crimes. Known for its satirical take on modern culture, crime-focused narratives, and complete player freedom, GTA has become one of the most successful and influential gaming franchises of all time.
Since launching in 1997, the franchise has sold more than 455 million units worldwide, with GTA V (5) alone having generated roughly half of this, and reaching $1 billion in retail sales faster than any entertainment release in history. Beyond sales, GTA has become a cultural phenomenon that influences music, fashion, internet culture, and social conversations, cementing its place as one of the most recognisable and commercially successful series in the world.
What is GTA 6?
GTA VI (GTA 6) is widely expected to be the biggest entertainment launch in history. The game arrives after a 13-year gap since the release of GTA 5 in 2013, one of the longest waits between major releases in the franchise’s history. The anticipation, combined with the immense popularity of the GTA series, has led analysts to predict that GTA 6 will generate more revenue than any other single piece of media in 2026. Considering its predecessor made up around $8 billion in lifetime revenue, GTA 6 is viewed as a cultural event on an unprecedented scale.
Like previous GTA titles, players can freely explore a vast open world, complete missions, interact with characters, and drive vehicles. In this installment, the game is set in a fictional state, ‘Leonida ’- inspired by Florida – and follows two characters, Jason and Lucia, who become entangled in a conspiracy theory. The game will be an open-world crime adventure, allowing players to alternate between characters, navigate gang rivalries, police pursuits, heists, and personal relationships… but we’ll get into that in a second.
@charmthegamer The World Cup is on right now, but I still think grand theft auto 6 is going to be one of the biggest cultural events of 2026. We are going to sick mass sick leave, news reports and Rockstar games printing money. What do you think is bigger? Who’s GTA VI’s audience?
Few entertainment releases have an audience as broad as GTA 6. At one end are long-time fans who have spent more than a decade waiting for the next chapter, many of whom grew up with earlier GTA titles and are returning for a dose of nostalgia. At the other are younger players who were too young to experience previous releases and will encounter the franchise for the first time through GTA 6. This creates a rare multigenerational audience that spans teenagers, young adults, and players in their 30s and 40s, united by the cultural significance of the series. For some, GTA 6 is a return to a world they know; for others, it is the beginning of their relationship with one of gaming’s most influential franchises.
Over the years, the franchise has reached far beyond traditional gamers, influencing music, fashion, internet culture, and social media trends. As a result, GTA 6 is expected to attract not only dedicated players but also casual audiences who want to be part of the cultural moment.
It’s the same type of experience that has engaged fandoms across sports like Wimbledon and the US Open, or football during the World Cup. Many people who may not regularly play video games will still engage with trailers, livestreams, creator content, and online discussion simply because GTA launches have become global events.
Setting the scene: Why is GTA so highly anticipated?
The 13-year wait
One of the biggest drivers of this anticipation is simply time. More than 13 years separate GTA 6 from its predecessor, making it one of the longest waits between major entries in gaming history. In that time, entire generations of players have grown up, entered the workforce, and become consumers with vastly different expectations of entertainment. However, the red thread that has connected 2013 to 2026 is the community around GTA 5.
Despite the length of time, people are still playing GTA 5. Campaign Executive Rez Mostofa shared, “For 13 years, I’ve found myself returning to the game at least quarterly to play online with friends.” Why? Because “as time went on, nobody even truly desired a sequel because GTA 5 had such great longevity” while Account Executive Gus Grant voiced, “The older games are a huge part of why people still care so much. San Andreas, Vice City, GTA 6 were all massive in their own eras, and even though they look dated now, the fun still holds up.”

A Shiny New Toy
But let’s face it, after 13 years, people want something new. Nostalgia is powerful, but even the most devoted fans want to experience something new. Advances in graphics, game worlds, AI, music integration, and storytelling have raised the bar significantly since GTA 5 launched, and audiences expect GTA 6 to showcase just how far gaming has come. “Thinking of just the GFX alone, GTA 5 was amazing for GFX at the time, and considering how far technology has advanced from 13 years ago, we expect amazing things,” says Video Producer Charlotte Beaumont, similarly echoed by Rez: “A lot has changed since 2013; people are ready for even shinier graphics, new cars, and cool things to do.”
That’s what makes the release so compelling. It combines the familiarity of a beloved franchise with the excitement of discovery. Players know and trust the GTA brand, but they’re also eager to explore a completely new world, new characters, and new experiences. It’s the promise of the unknown wrapped inside something already deeply familiar.
Rockstar’s development legacy
“GTA is as close to gaming royalty as you can get,” says Campaign Manager Olly Paul. Unlike other developers who race to push new content out to the market fastest, “Rockstar set themselves apart by taking their time to really craft their games.” From Red Dead Redemption to the other successful instalments of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, the legacy of their enormous and all-consuming games lays the groundwork for their next success, which their audience is more likely to be tapped into.
Cultural legacy
But it’s not just GTA’s development legacy that stands the test of time; it’s also the massive cultural impact that it’s made and retained.
GTA is considered a cultural juggernaut and has been able to cement itself at the centre of modern entertainment and pop culture. With legacy brands, the primary challenge is to identify where you can continue to fit into your consumers’ lives, and this isn’t solely exclusive to the entertainment industry. Senior Legal and Compliance Manager Aman Powar shared, “the phenomenon surrounding GTA 6 extends far beyond traditional gaming, operating on a scale where experiencing the title at launch carries the same social status as acquiring a high-end luxury fashion accessory.” From Burberry to Levi’s, brands have continued to recognise that legacy needs to be translated into culture. Rockstar has managed to carve out the space for their audience to continue to respect, admire, and be hooked by the legacy of GTA.

The Internet’s Longest Hype Cycle?
The scale of anticipation reached new heights in 2022, when one of the biggest leaks in gaming history showed early development footage from GTA 6 online. The leak dominated headlines and gave fans their first glimpse of the game years before the release date, 19 November 2026. Rather than cooling the jets, it instead fuelled the fire. Every piece of information, genuine or otherwise, became part of the ongoing conversation as players searched for clues about what Rockstar was building.
The community detectives took over, analyzing screenshots frame by frame, breaking down trailer footage for hidden details, hunting down Rockstar’s job listings for hints about new features, locations, and gameplay. In fact, entire YouTube channels and TikTok accounts emerged dedicated to Rockstar speculation, while Reddit threads attracted thousands of comments debating theories and predictions.
The Extended Look That Broke Traditional Marketing Rules
Brand marketing disguised as entertainment
Rockstar partnered with Netflix to premiere ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look‘, 26 minutes of non-stop in-game footage, which gave Netflix subscribers six hours of exclusive access before the footage became free on YouTube and Rockstar’s website. Sharing an inside look at the game – the new features, enhanced graphics, and brand-new characters – the strategy created massive scarcity and hype, driving 31.1 million views on Netflix in four days and topping charts in 87 of 93 countries.

Every frame became content
Most marketing campaigns hope audiences will watch their content, but GTA 6’s extended look inspired audiences to create thousands of pieces of content from it.
During the release, streamers on Twitch were livestreaming watchalongs of the extended look for their audience, offering live commentary and reactions as the episode went live, with content clip-farmed and shared across TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts to beat other creators to the punch. Within minutes of release, creators were uploading frame-by-frame breakdowns, identifying details that casual viewers may have missed, and for weeks after, the 26 minutes of video footage were continually discussed. Rather than consuming the content and moving on, fans became active participants, dissecting every second in search of any tidbits of information.
Hidden Easter eggs quickly became one of the biggest talking points. Viewers scrutinised background details, radio stations, clothing brands, billboards and visual references, debating whether they hinted at new storylines, gameplay or links to previous GTA titles. Character theories also spread rapidly, with fans speculating about relationships and how different characters might fit into the wider narrative.
What’s Playing Out on Social Media Ahead of the GTA VI Launch?
What’s interesting about GTA 6’s marketing strategy is how little lifting Rockstar has done to keep themselves in the conversation. While most publishers rely on a steady stream of trailers, social posts, and reveals to maintain attention, the GTA community has effectively taken on that role themselves. Across TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, and X, fans have spent years creating content, building theories, and keeping momentum alive between official announcements. In many ways, the community has become GTA 6’s biggest marketing engine.

Character arcs
Discussions around the wider cast and storyline have become a content genre in themselves. Fans regularly debate relationships between characters, speculate about plot twists, and compare the narrative direction to iconic GTA stories of the past. The result is an ongoing conversation that blurs the line between what’s been officially revealed and what the community has collectively imagined.
However, one of the biggest GTA 6 conversations hasn’t been about missions, gameplay, or even the wider storyline. It’s about co-protagonist Lucia. Since Rockstar revealed the character, social media has been flooded with memes, posts, and videos joking that players are ready to leave their real-life partners for Lucia, with the character quickly becoming one of the internet’s most talked-about virtual fascinations.
…
Olly Paul, Campaign Manager
“We’ve seen people get their partners to sign agreements that give them uninterrupted gaming time…”
…
Across TikTok, X and Instagram, creators have documented partners reacting to Lucia’s reveal, shared parody relationship ultimatums, posted edits, and celebrated her arrival. The conversation has become less about the game and more about the cultural obsession surrounding a fictional character. While much of the content is tongue-in-cheek, it demonstrates GTA 6’s ability to create conversation beyond gaming audiences.
FX and Graphics Comparisons
Fans have closely examined lighting, weather systems, NPC behaviour, facial animations, and environmental detail to understand just how far Rockstar has pushed the technology forward. Side-by-side comparisons with GTA V regularly rack up millions of views, showcasing the leap in visual realism. At the same time, players have been searching for imperfections. Discussions around potential bugs, glitches, and technical limitations have become part of the broader conversation, with viewers pausing footage to identify anything that feels unfinished or unusual.

The wait (of course)
No discussion around GTA VI would be complete without acknowledging the memes. After more than a decade between entries, the wait itself has become one of the internet’s favourite running jokes. “The “we got XYZ before GTA 6” meme has probably been one of the biggest gaming memes of the last few years. It’s become shorthand for how long the wait has been, and it escaped gaming culture completely,” says Gus.
Many posts focus on just how much life has changed since GTA V launched. Players compare old-school photos with current careers, relationships, or families, highlighting how an entire generation has grown up while waiting for the next installment. These posts tap into the nostalgia surrounding the franchise and reinforce just how significant the release feels for long-time fans.
The emerging soundtracks
Music has always been a defining part of the GTA experience. As a result, speculation around GTA 6’s soundtrack has become a major conversation across social media. Fans are constantly discussing which artists, genres, and radio stations could appear in the final game, often creating playlists of songs they believe fit the world Rockstar is building on Spotify.
Leaks, rumours, and unconfirmed reports have only fuelled that speculation further. Mentions of artists such as Travis Scott have generated significant discussion online, while creators regularly post prediction videos and mock soundtrack concepts.

GTA VI and the State of Modern Gaming
The release every publisher and provider is watching
GTA 6 is a release that is actively reshaping the wider gaming industry. Long before launch, publishers, platform holders and retailers have been preparing for its arrival, recognising that attention, player time and spending are likely to be concentrated around a single title. The scale of the release means it’s an industry-wide moment with implications that stretch far beyond the game itself.
Publishers are already thinking carefully about where their own launches sit in relation to GTA 6. As Olly explains: “They know that other gaming companies avoid the time around the release date like the plague because it’s all anyone will be playing.”
Following the release of the extended look, demand for the hardware required to play the game surged, with the PS5 Pro already selling out across major providers, and resale prices soaring. Search interest for the PS5 Pro also significantly broke out after the day the trailer came out. GTA VI appears to be reversing the traditional dynamic, convincing players to upgrade their hardware specifically in preparation for launch. It is a rare example of a single title influencing purchasing decisions across the entire gaming ecosystem.
Gus believes: “Since the Fortnite era, every game wants to be the next big thing. Every publisher wants the next massive cultural moment, but realistically, there is no game on the horizon with the potential to be as big as GTA 6.” Whether that’s reflected through shifting launch windows, increased hardware demand, or the sheer volume of industry attention.

Why GTA VI May Be the Biggest Entertainment Launch Ever
Beyond gaming
Few entertainment releases command attention on the scale of GTA 6. While blockbuster films dominate box offices for a few weeks, streaming launches fight for audience attention in an increasingly crowded market, and album drops often peak within days, GTA 6 has spent years occupying cultural space before its release. It’s being discussed not just in gaming communities, but across social media, mainstream news, sport, music and entertainment. The anticipation surrounding GTA 6 feels closer to a crossover between a Marvel blockbuster, a global sporting event and a surprise album release from a major artist. Unlike most launches, it’s competing across the entire entertainment landscape.
The $1BN sick day conversation
Perhaps the clearest sign of GTA 6’s cultural scale is the fact that economists, business publications, and industry commentators are discussing its impact outside of the gaming echo chamber. Predictions that millions of people could take time off work when the game launches have become a story in themselves, with economist José García Montalvo suggesting the release could result in around 1.5 million Americans taking the day off and potentially contributing to more than a $1 billion in loss productivity. Now, whether these forecasts become reality is almost beside the point. The fact that people genuinely believe a video game could have a measurable impact demonstrates how large GTA 6 has become in the public consciousness.
As Aman notes: “Major sports channels like NFL Memes routinely joke about the title, with analysts playfully worrying that the release will dent athlete productivity in the NFL and NBA.” The jokes have become part of the wider narrative, reinforcing the idea that GTA VI isn’t simply a game launch. It’s a cultural event expected to affect conversations, schedules, and attention spans far beyond gaming audiences.
The challenge for brands
But for brands, here’s where the challenge lies
For all the anticipation surrounding GTA 6, Rockstar has taken a surprisingly hands-off approach to traditional brand involvement. Unlike many major entertainment properties, GTA 6 features no licensed branded locations, instead continuing the franchise’s long-standing approach of creating parody versions of real-world retailers, restaurants, and services.
That creates a unique challenge for marketers. With no official product placements, sponsorship opportunities, or branded environments to tap into, brands cannot simply insert themselves into the game world. Instead, they need to find ways to participate in the wider cultural conversation surrounding GTA 6 without feeling forced, opportunistic, or disconnected from what fans actually care about.
How do brands fit into non-branded spaces?
The opportunity lies beyond the game itself. GTA 6 is no longer just a gaming release. It has become a cultural event that touches music, fashion, sport, beauty, food, entertainment, and online communities. Conversation around the game is happening everywhere, from TikTok trends and memes to fan theories, creator content and lifestyle discussions.
For brands, success will come from activating around these adjacent interests rather than trying to force a direct connection to the game. The brands that win will be those that understand where GTA 6’s audiences already spend their time and create content, partnerships, and experiences that naturally fit into those communities. From snacks for the sick day (…or game day), makeup looks inspired by the characters, or even activating the streamers who will be gearing up for their GTA 6 gameplay content, the goal is not to insert your logo into GTA 6. It’s to become part of the wider cultural moment that exists around it.

The Key Questions Remain
Can anything live up to 13 years of expectation?
Perhaps the biggest question hanging over GTA 6 isn’t how many copies it will sell or how big launch day will be, but whether anything can realistically satisfy thirteen years of anticipation. Over that time, expectations have grown far beyond what any game could usually deliver. Every rumour and fan theory added another layer to what players imagine GTA 6 will be. For many fans, the game has become less about what Rockstar is actually making and more about what it hopes to be.
Will GTA VI redefine gaming again?
Historically, every major GTA release has pushed the industry forward in some way, whether through open-world design, storytelling, technical ambition, or just sheer cultural relevance. As a result, many people are expecting GTA 6 to change the face of gaming, extending beyond technology. Players are looking for innovation in how worlds feel, characters interact, stories unfold, and online communities evolve. Meanwhile, publishers, platform holders, and developers across the industry are watching closely to see whether Rockstar can once again set a new benchmark.
Is anticipation now more powerful than advertising?
One of the most fascinating aspects of GTA 6 is how little traditional marketing has been required to keep the conversation alive. For years, the community has effectively become Rockstar’s largest promotional channel. From spending thousands of hours analysing trailers frame by frame, discussing theories on Reddit, UGC content on TikTok, or in-depth YouTube explainers. Streamers, celebrities and content creators have all helped add fuel to the fire, often without any direct involvement from Rockstar itself.
GTA 6 raises a massive unanswered question for brands everywhere: when audiences become invested enough to do the marketing for you, how do you return the favour?
